Wyse 60 Terminal Emulation Now Included in PASSPORT

PASSPORT now supports Wyse 60 terminal emulation for powerful, full-featured TCP/IP access to UNIX® host applications

Wyse Technology produces an entire family of terminals ranging from the Wyse 30 to the Wyse 670 ES. The Wyse 60 terminal, containing a popular assortment of features, is commonly used to access UNIX® host applications. The Wyse 60 terminal emulation feature is available in version 2004-3722-3 of PASSPORT WEB TO HOST and version 2004-3930-4 of PASSPORT PC TO HOST. PASSPORT WEB TO HOST is a web based terminal emulation product installed on a web server whereas PASSPORT PC TO HOST is a desktop based terminal emulation product.

Configuring a Wyse 60 Session

To configure a Wyse 60 session with PASSPORT PC TO HOST use the Communication->Setup menu command, then click on the Emulation Type drop down box and select Wyse 60. Type in the IP Address of your host system and then press the Connect button. To configure a Wyse 60 session for PASSPORT WEB TO HOST, start the Administration Configuration Program, click on Wyse Display, click on Sessions and then Right Mouse Click to create a new session.

Wyse 60 Options

The Options->Wyse menu command displays a dialog box that provides additional configuration settings. These settings can be set by the end-user while a Wyse 60 terminal emulation session is active and running.

The screen display width can be either 80 columns or 132 columns. The screen display length can be set to 24, 25, 42 or 43 rows. The Wyse 60 screen display contains a status line and also an optional label line that can be turned on or off. When the label line is enabled, the 25 and 43 row display is used and when it is disabled the 24 or 42 row display is used. The label line is optional and is typically used to display a text description that is associated with the use of function keys. The status line is last row on the screen display and is used to display either standard or extended status about the state of the emulation session connection.

The PASSPORT Wyse 60 emulator also provides various cursor mode settings. The carriage return (CR) character can be either mapped to a single carriage return (CR), or to a carriage return (CR) and line feed (LF) combination. There are also settings for how end of line wrapping, scrolling text, and scrolling text speed.

The answerback message is similar to the answerback feature found in DEC VT-220 terminals. The answerback message is typically used to identify the terminal to the host system by sending a message to the host, automatically, without operator action.

Securing a Wyse 60 Emulation Session with SSL or SSH

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer), the de facto Internet security standard originally developed by Netscape, is supported as an option for Wyse 60 emulation sessions. SSL security provides both authentication and encryption to prevent eavesdropping and tampering with your host sessions. In order to use the PASSPORT SSL feature you must either connect to a host system that supports the SSL protocol, or connect through a proxy server or protocol converter that supports SSL sessions.

Also, SSH (Secure Shell) is supported with Wyse 60 emulation sessions. In order to use the PASSPORT SSH feature, you must connect to a host system that supports the SSH Secure Shell protocol.

Host Integration using Wyse 60 Terminal Emulation

PASSPORT is commonly used to provide client-side host integration solutions. There are two programmatic interfaces that can be used.

• HLLAPI Interface
• Object Interface

HLLAPI is the High Level Language Application Programming Interface established by IBM in the mid 1980s and is still used today. The HLLAPI interface is recommended when PASSPORT is being used to replace an existing terminal emulator (such as Attachmate® Corp's EXTRA!® or IBM Personal Communications®) and there is a need to migrate an existing HLLAPI application.

The Object Interface is recommended for developing new host integration applications. The Object Interface includes an hierarchy of objects including: System, Sessions, Session, Screen, Area and OIA. Zephyr provides the PASSPORT Object Toolkit, available free of charge to customers who license at least 500 units of PASSPORT via an annual subscription license. PASSPORT also provides a macro scripting language that can be used to automate common tasks.
